Hi guys

Well one upgrade part that provides great results is the cylinder head. And in some contries or states it's hard to find this part at good prices, so to save time, money I made my own upgraded cylinder head (believe me it's much more fun to make your own than just click somewhere and order it over)

Here's how:
Material:
- Sandpaper (50/100/300/600, not quiet sure if the labeling is the same in other countries)
- Ordinary Black&Decker, or similar

Start by fitting the nozzle in the Black&Decker, and use very gently the lowest graded sandpaper (50, for example) to give the main form to the inside of the cylinder head. (Of course you have to have the head spinning in your tool)

like this:

Once you have the main form, use the same procedure with higher graded sandpaper to give that smooth finish (with the highest graded sandpaper use some water to obtain best results)
it should start to look like this:

In the end use a little piece of inox to give a bright look and extra-smooth surface.
Clean or wash it, to remove all particles.

In less than one hour you should have the work done and looking like this:

Before and After

hope it helps

Have fun

Were there any substantial performance increases?

I really don't like to do this, but I just have to ask....

Did you have any way of measuring the before and after fps, range and accuracy, did you??

Results?

Sorry, just it is difficult for me to swallow empty claims after my shortyusa days..

Sure m8 no problem at all

I tried to make the tests the most professional I could:

Accuracy: 2 targets (for "Before and After") at 40m, with the same scope calibration, same hop-up, same wind conditions, using the prone supported position (all variables wrote down) in the first I hit 6 in 10 shots, in the second (upgraded) I hit 9 in 10 shots (see below info about bb's)

FPS: I used a coke-can (not very accurate) and it punched a bit deeper in the bottom center but not enough to penetrate (as expected!), (legal limit here is 375fps, with 0.20g bb's, it's required 385fps to penetrate the mencioned section of the can)

Range: tests Human targets show exelent range with precison up to aprox. 70m (compared to 65/66m with stock head) with really the CRAPPY bb's Cybergun 0.30g (with better ones it should perform better in all aspects)
The rifle is know capable to shoot up to a maximum range of aprox. 80/85m

I think it's all...

Best Regards

Thank you very much!

I may have to try that.

May I ask, what is your country? You expressed that it was difficult to get upgrades in your country..

did you get this idea from the PDI cylinder head, I was wondering how this would help the gun, I know it allows the air to move out smoother. But I know now how it helps thanks

is that all it does?

edit: shouldn't the stock cylinder head have the rubber pad on the back of it? where did that go?

It looks like that one is tapered alot more then the one you built I wonder if you tapered it more youd see even more enhanced performance.

Yes PDI's tapered way more than mine...but I'm trying to stick to 375fps limit in Portugal, and still have a durable cylinder head...the material in witch the stock one is made is kind off soft, that's why it's so easy and fast to modify.

If you don't have any restrictions go for a even more tapered one a-thumbsup.gif

did you make your own cylinder head from scratch, or did you do that to the stock one? Do you think It would work to perform that procedure on the stock cylinder head?

mmm Id have to agree about the stock cylinder head being really cheap, mine stripped and I need a new cylinder after using a 170 for a few months but I guess thats pretty durable haha. Have you looked into a TK twist barrel supposedly it gives 200ft. range and great groupings at that distance in 328 fps sniper rifles.

there are no tape mods for a VSR, unless you are talking about a BAR 10

Oh I don't know much about the VSRs in comparison. I just assumed because it's do-able on one, it'd be the same on the other.
In terms of clones, it'll be 1 more modification to do.

Nah it's cool. I learn a little more from this forum with every thread I read.

One thing I wondered... does having the cylinder head in a gradual funnel like this have an effect on the airbrake? I would think the effect of the airbrake would be reduced as the hole is initially larger.

thats logical. I can see where you get that idea, but usually one would cut the airbrake in order to get their spring to do its job. tapering the cylinder head only helps that even more.

Couldn't agree more a-thumbsup.gif

In my case I ignore that fact since PDI's Hard Piston doesn't have an airbrake..

In my experience, aribrake does more than slowing down the piston. It removes impact vibration. As you gain speed by cutting the air brake down, you lose some accuracy.

Having said that, this modification should be recommended to those who decides to go above 300fps.

Good job.

Helps more? Makes no sense ;0

Taped cylinder head has less space where piston hits. Same effect for the piston which hits it's head to the cylinder head. I think this mod can broke piston easier than without the mod :0 More stress for less area, hope you understand what I am trying to say.

But how about making piston head like a round :0

Hard one :E Nice mod, maybe I try with my older cylinder head (not stock one ;)) and wonder after it what went wrong as always ^^

it helps in the sense that it will increase fps and fps consistency, thus increasing accuracy. it could decrease the life of the piston (red or orange), but I don't thing that much, unless you are running a 190.

Yeap. Cant know without testing (: I am using red piston at the time, and I have one orange without use. Last owner of the orange piston gave it to me, because it ate his sears, 2 times, 2nd sear.

But what about the airbreak system with that mod?

The red is for normal sears, the orange is specifically for the zero trigger.. That;s why the orange ate his sears.

Hi guys

Here's another modification I did:
Basically I drilled 1mm from the 4mm inside diameter of the nozzle,
as you can see by the pic's

I did this to another cylinder head (the one that I drilled) witch this time was modified with a different angle, making it more cone like.

as you can see it's 25% widder (1mm in 4mm total is 25%)

Results:
It got a hell of a lot louder shooting (not so good)
And the piston is hitting the head a lot harder...

Soon I will post range and accuracy results of this last mod (as soon as the weather conditions are optimized)

(In case you're wondering, yes I used a digital caliper to maintain a accurate discipline)

Best Regards
SniperPT

Edited your post a bit (:
I know they are not the same, I have them both as I said. He HAD laylax zero trigger (which sucked hard), and still the orange one ate his sears. Maybe fixing the metal part at the end from slanted to vertical...

So theres one who has been happily after this mod, and one who doesn't like sound. For me the sound is more important, so is there any way to have .music/.video files where I could clearly hear the different? (:
