Sun Tzu described the most basic maneuvers in his Art of War as the Zheng and the Qi. In short, it is a flanking maneuver. The zheng aims to supress its enemy from the front while a larger team goes around and get to the flank or rear of the enemy, also known as the qi. There are also many other variations of this tactic, the most popular being the Pincer movement (or Double Flank). Here are the keys to this maneuver:
1. Be stealthy: if you can go undetected, maximum suprise can be inflicted on the enemy. 2. Force the enemy to adjust: If the enmy is forced to adjust its lines, it leaves its rear exposed to an attack. 3. The Qi must have numerical superiority: with it, firepower can be concentrated on the weak spot of the enemy line. 4. Sometimes if the enemy adjusts its line, the Zheng becomes the Qi and the Qi the Zheng. On a flanking maneuver, a defensive force is concentrated on the flank force. The new Qi could now make a successful frontal attack. Counter-Flanking: One of the toughest maneuvers to ever beat is a successful counter-flank. Here are a few ways to beat it. 1. Ambush: A flanking force could be descended upon its rear as it is moving forward. Place an ambush on your flank to counter a possible move. 2. Defeat in Detail: The most helpful way to beat a flank is defeat in detail. When there is a flanking maneuver, the 2 bodies of zheng and Qi are seperated. Leave a small force to keep the Zheng occupied, while you send a very large portion to descend on the Qi that may not be under cover. Maximum firepower can be used to defeat the Qi, and now you can make a counter-attack on the Zheng of the flank if possible. Hope this helped. |
