2 questions:
1) If you get hit in the face while wearing a balaclava does it hurt?
2) How can you tell if the goggles are ANSI approved

1) Yes it will still sting, but the chances of an open wound will be decreased. I wear one to reduce the chances of a BB going into the ear or mouth. I heard that teeth can still be chipped through balaclava, though.
2) You simply have to examine the product specs from the maker's website, on the packaging, or in the ad where you see it. If it's not explicitly stated, I wouldn't buy it. Which goggles are you looking at right now?

If you think you may take a round close up you should have a full mask. :foot

I wear a mesh fukk face mask, but I wear a THICK baclava underneath to protects neck and back of head-it works real good, especially when its cold

What if I use a material like cloth or wool, would the impact be less damaging?

yeah anything you have on will decrease it, paintball goggle systems work, but are hard to use with certain steel sights... and scopes for that matter, but they give good protection
I don't recommend mesh because if someone uses bio-bbs or very cheap bbs, they can explode when hitting the mesh and hurt your eyes from getting dust... plastics are better... its clear and reliable.

I would suggest not wearing a mesh face mask or goggles. BP had a bad experience with those.
He was wearing a full wire mesh face mask and was hit in (I think) the mouth. The mesh stopped the bb alright, but it also split in to shards and cut his lips and face. If that would have been his eyes he would have been blind. Since the baclave under the mask doesn't cover the eyes, you are opening yourself up to get hurt real bad.
Go out and buy normal goggles or face mask, and throw out your mesh 'blind-you-in-second' mask. :)

That is true. For maximum protection for the teeth, wear a mouthguard under your baclava.

Guys I know this is about face protection/hurt and not the entire general body but I'd feel stupid to start a new topic about something very closely related to this one. So I'll just ask my question here and please forgive me hippykiller66 for invading your topic
What I want to know is, does airsoft hurt? I paintball and it stings for a little bit but other than that II wouldn't consider it "painful". I realize that the airsoft plastci BB's are much smaller than paintballs and their point of impact would be more direct so the pain might be greater. SO basiclly to sum it up, does airsfot sting/hurt? Thanks in advance.

It really depends, what gun you are shot with, how close you were, and stuff like that but yeah it stings especially with a gas or electric gun

I also have a question. What is the difference between a balaclava and a ski mask?

Not much.
Except a ski mask is specifically designed to keep you warm. Not all Balaclava are designed specifically to keep you warm.. The drawback of a balaclava is though, that even though not designed for it, they do keep your head warm. Your a lucky person if you can find a balaclava made of t-shirt material, much cooler.
