First things first, read the whole post and understand it before you laugh at me. I first really learned about the concept of a "Ballistic Knife" from the game Call of Duty: Black Ops and Deadliest Warrior on Spike TV. I understand that ideas learned from Call of Duty usually don't work or are really stupid in the airsoft world, but the ballistic knife struck me as a concept that if reproduced in airsoft could be an interesting and occasionally useful weapon. For those of you who don't know what one is it is basically a fixed blade knife with a detachable blade that has a very stiff spring behind it in the knife handle. The blade is held in place by a catch but when released, shoots about 20 feet and sticks into whatever is in its way. For obvious reasons, this device has been very illegal in all of the US since 1986... Unless you make one with a rubber or foam blade a-grin.gif .This is a very simple system and in about 2 minutes I already drew up in my head how to make this in airsoft. I might go to the hardware store this weekend and buy the necessary materials (except a rubber or foam blade) and try to build one using the stock spring and guide from my BAR-10. Now this is where you guys come in, because I have the thought in my head that if I fire this at someone in a game at close range in might plow straight through the lenses of their goggles and cause quite an injury? Do you think this would happen with, say, a stock BAR-10 spring and one of http://www.airsoftpo...oducts_id=25531 blades? Should I use a lighter spring? As for the blade, the only other option I see is cutting down one of those foam nerf swords from walmart.

The rubber blade will hurt to much/could easily cause dammage, and the foam sword won't fly through the air fast enough. It won't work if you want it to be safe.

I don't see why the foam blade wouldn't fly, It's not like it's going to be a whole sword, just a small blade made of the same material.

Not sure if it wouldn't or not as I've never used a "Nerf sword".

The foam sword might work if you cover it in an even coat of liquid latex, easily obtainable at costume/craft stores, maybe even the hardware store if you're lucky.

A rubber knife isn't going through an ANSI rated lense unless it is at extremely fast speeds. And you have absolutely nothing to worry about with nerf or foam.

UPDATE:
I figure I might as well keep you guys posted on this as some may find it interesting. Today I visited a local hardware store and 2 PVC pipes, several end-caps, a spring, and lots of cutting later I have successfully completed a proof of concept test. I was afraid that my knife would not fly well enough to be combat effective, however my tests showed that in its current form, I can propel my cylinder (no blade yet) approximately 20 feet with little to no "Arcing" of the shot. Accuracy may leave something to be desired, but will probably improve with a sturdy trigger system and the addition of an aerodynamic blade. I still have to add a blade, construct my trigger mechanism, and eventually make a functioning safety, but in my eyes at least I have proven the potential of carrying one of these into battle in substitution of a standard knife.

Is it patriotism or is it hate of Russians? Would you buy an AUG or SIG but you refuse to buy an AK? Then it is called racism.

ya, airsoft hurts nuff already, besides, I have that rubber knife and it is extremely flexible and soft. id be surprised if it would go through a couple sheets of paper. if u put less than a pound of pressure on the side it just bends than goes back to shape once u let go. it is the knife im using right now to make my ballistic knife I started before I even saw this thread. my biggest problem with the rubber knife is that it is somewhat too soft, just scratching at it a bit with your fingernail with begin to scrape off some of the rubber. that is also good cuz im gonna cut the blades width down a bit cuz its to heavy for the spring I hope to use.
