The artillery strike preceded an assault by Chinese mechanized infantry, the secondary attack was quickly repelled by South Korean air support with minimal coalition casualties reported. The South Korean city of Incheon has been a hotly contested region during the course of the war, with it's proximity to the DMZ and large transportation network by air, land, and sea making it an appealing target for North Korean and Chinese forces and a vital supply route for coalition troops. - Chad Kennedy; Detroit Free Press. Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull Announces Australian Support For Coalition Forces In a televised address, Australian Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull announced Australia's intention of joining the joint United States-South Korean military coalition operating on the Korean Peninsula. Australia has offered the use of military bases and airfields by coalition forces as well as a contingent of 10,000 troops, military advisors and air support for ground operations. Prime Minister Turnbull stated that the growing levels of violence in the war, the destabilizing nature of the conflict, and a massive refugee crisis as Australia's reason for entering, saying; "Australia is concerned with saving the lives of coalition forces and preserving the nature of representative government. By allowing this conflict to continue, it will ultimately move our direction, we have no option but to act." - Jessica Harrison; BBC. Chuncheon Again Under Siege By Chinese Troops Elements of the U.S. 8th Army along with South Korean 703rd Special Assault Regiment are fortifying in and around the rubble of Chuncheon. Recent intelligence verified by aerial reconnaissance shows large numbers of Chinese infantry within 10 kilometers of the DMZ near the border of Gangwon province. UNICEF aid workers along with Doctors Without Border's personnel have been quickly trying to evacuate civilians and all non-military personnel from the city in the rapidly worsening situation. The evacuation of civilians and refugees has been hampered by the deteriorating conditions of roads and railways leading in and out of the city. - Amy Barnes; CNN. USS Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group Moves Towards Korean Peninsula In a strong show of support for American and South Korean forces, President Donald Trump has ordered the USS Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group to assist ground operations in the region. On his twitter account the president said that; “this war has gone on for far too long. It is unfortunate that myself and my administration have inherited this mess. The time has come to act and end this once and for all.” The carrier strike group, also known as ‘Carrier Strike Group 1’ includes an aircraft carrier with fighter aircraft, attack helicopters, guided missile cruisers, destroyers, and a complete complement of crews. It is expected that the USS Carl Vinson will be a strong show power projection as well as supporting ground forces, by doing so the U.S. president hopes to force the Chinese and North Korean government's back to the negotiating table. - Jason Caldwell; Reuters. North Korean Forces Maintain Hold on Sariwon Against Coalition Assault In a military operation that has lasted for months, North Korean forces have successfully been able to hold the the city of Sariwon against South Korean and American troops. Despite aerial bombardment and unquestionable air superiority, allied coalition progress has been limited to the outer suburbs of the city and pockets of industrial areas. American and South Korean commanders anticipated stiff resistance from North Korean troops operating in the city, the KPA I Corp along with elements of the 105th Armored Division continue to maintain full control of the city. Roadblocks and landmines that have been erected on all main routes in and out of the city provide a challenge for coalition forces attempting to enter. - Sarah Bryant; Fox News. ~ Complete Operation: Flash Fire/Firestorm Storyline (2006-present) ~ Operation: Firestorm (10/15/2011): Communist Forces Victory. Event End: 5:00 PM. Storyline: The ‘War on Drugs’ is a loosely used and general term for a set of international legislation, prohibition, financial assistance, military aid, and conflicts both regional and internal with the stated goals of reducing the global illegal drug trade (narcotic and/or controlled substance black market), reduction of drug related crime and violence, and reducing the consumption of illegal controlled substances. According to a 2003 United Nations report, the worldwide drug trade generated an estimated $321.6 billion (USD); an estimated 1% of all global trade. In the United States, President Richard Nixon officially launched the ‘War on Drugs’ in 1971 declaring that drug abuse was “public enemy number one.” Often since their formation nation states around the world have passed laws and regulations attempting to control the sale, use, and distribution of controlled substances. Official attempts to regulate or prohibit psychoactive substances came as early as 1729 with Chinese laws prohibiting the smoking of opium. Prohibition laws are considered by law enforcement and governments to be some of the more difficult regulations to enforce; simply speaking citizens often times choose not to obey. On June 2nd, 2011, the Global Commission on Drug Policy including former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and the former presidents of Mexico, Brazil, and Columbia officially declared that the “War on Drugs has failed.” Governments around the world are engaged in a myriad of legal and actual battles both for and against the prohibition of drugs. Even after the ink of the legislative pen has dried and the muzzle of the rifle falls silent, a number of serious questions will remain... Has the War on Drugs reduced the demand? Has the supply of drugs been reduced or eliminated? Can morality be legislated for the benefit of public good? Should public health be treated as a legal issue? Tajik Border Guards Skirmish With Pakistani Smugglers Twenty-five soldiers monitoring a rural post near the Tajikistan-Pakistan border have been wounded, and ten are dead after a day long skirmish with Pakistani smugglers. In what local officials are calling a “major smuggling operation” in the Wakhan Corridor region of Tajikistan. Bordered by Pakistan in the North, Afghanistan in the Northwest, and China to the East, the narrow strip of mountainous land serves as an important crossing point for international trade commerce. In an official statement released by Dushanbe and the Minister of Interior, Pakistani smugglers were intercepted approximately 10 kilometers inside Tajikistan beyond border checkpoints. Two tonnes of Heroin, 500 pounds of Methamphetamine, and $200,000 in Russian Roubles were abandoned during a sustained firefight. Four smugglers were killed during the clash, their names have not been released by the Tajik government. Regional instabilities have added to the growth of the international drug trade through Tajikistan in recent years. Taking advantage of disruptions caused by the Arab Spring movement, corrupt government officials, and poor economic conditions, smugglers have been transporting increasing amounts of narcotics through the region. Often sourced and grown in countries such as Afghanistan and others in the “Golden Triangle”, the destinations are often places such as China, Eastern Europe, or Africa. Our mores and venerated traditions are corrupted and sold in back alleys of Seoul by vendors of capitalism. The glorious legacy of Korea, built on the backs of freedom fighters is burdened by the scourge of American colonialism upon our world. - KCBS Voice of Korea, Pyongyang Chuncheon Liberated After Months of North Korean Occupation Citizens of Gangwon province, South Korea are cheering as South Korean and American troops push resisting pockets of Chinese and North Korean troops out of the region. The province with a population of more than 1.5 million people, and its largest city of Chuncheon with more than 200,000, was quickly captured by North Korea during the beginning salvos of war. Sharing a Northern land border and a section of the DMZ with North Korea, the city was viewed as a key location for suppressing anticipated coalition resistance to the invasion. The future of the city however seems less certain to some than others. Having been captured during the initial outbreak of war, the city and its population have suffered greatly. Large sections of roadways and bridges were made impassible by repeated artillery barrages and air strikes, some of the craters large enough to swallow a passenger van. Less than 25% of the remaining urban population has access to electricity and potable water, telecommunications and internet networks have also been destroyed. In addition, over 100,000 people are said to have abandoned their homes and fled South when the first shots were fired. - Katie Wellsburg, NPR News; Manila. 65 Dead and Over 100 Wounded At Sydney Shopping Mall 65 people have been killed and more than 100 people severely wounded by what officials are calling a Pro-Chinese terrorist attack at a crowded shopping mall in Sydney, Australia. Initial reports including cell-phone footage captured by local residents tell of automatic gunfire and several explosions. Australian officials initially were quoted in saying that the dead and wounded numbered less than 50 combined, however as emergency personnel and law enforcement began sifting through the rubble, the number quickly grew. Multiple improvised explosive devices (IED's) are strongly believed to have caused the massive explosions and the remains several of Chinese made Type 56 assault rifles were also found at the scene. The attack has prompted renewed policy debates on the position of the Australian military in the mutual defense of the Oceanic region. The Australian government initially took a neutral position during the outbreak of war on the Korean peninsula, opting only for limited support (airspace, naval facilities, and intelligence) of American and South Korean military actions. The ANZUS Treaty between the United States, Australia, and New Zealand has been in affect since 1951, providing the aligned nations with mutual support and cooperation on military matters. The terrorist attack brings into question the long standing agreement between the three nations, and if Australia and New Zealand will join the United States and other coalition nations fighting a common North Korean-Chinese opponent. - Glenn Thompson, Reuters; Sydney. Televised Executions Spark Global Protest In a televised broadcast, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un addressed an audience of over one-hundred thousand at the Rungrado May Day Stadium in Pyongyang. The address, highlighting the military successes of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea and its Chinese allies was punctuated with a notes of caution towards would-be dissidents and military defectors. The Supreme Leader warned of the dangers of pervasive American propaganda regarding the conflict and stressed the cultural unity of the North Korean people. Following the speech and a brief military parade, a small cadre of North Korean special forces acted as a firing squad; gunning down a nearby group of twenty shackled military defectors. The speech and executions were televised nationally to North Korean citizens, including a radio broadcast for those that lacked a television set. The footage and broadcast has sparked global outrage and mass protests regarding the North Korean regime and it's unprecedented level of brutality. Social media websites such as twitter and Facebook have erupted with worldwide calls to expand military action in Korea. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement calling the televised executions barbaric. - Rebecca Rawley, CNN; New York City. Coalition Forces Begin Assault of Sariwon Elements of the US 8th Army along with the South Korean 3rd Armored Brigade began a ground assault on the North Korean city of Sariwon in North Hwanghae province. Beginning before dawn, the attack began with Republic of Korea aircraft bombing defenses and roadblocks just outside the city. Followed immediately by an rapidly advancing assault by Armored Personnel Carriers, Tanks, and Humvee's. An important commercial center and cultural icon, resistance to including well armed paramilitaries and suicide bombers is anticipated to be fierce. Large elements of the KPA I Corp, 105th Armored Division, along with several battalions of the Red Guards Militia are thought to have established a presence in the metropolitan area. Battlefield commanders have noticed a lull in North Korean and Chinese military operations and a significant change of tone and tactics. In recent weeks, combat has been limited to sporadic but intense firefights in isolated and otherwise quiet areas. Car bombs and suicide bombers termed Juche Jack by US service members have become more commonplace since the start of the conflict nearly a decade ago. - Woodrow Harrison, BBC News; London. ~ Complete Operation: Flash Fire/Firestorm Storyline (2006-present) ~ Operation: Firestorm (10/15/2011): Communist Forces Victory. Storyline: “Crack the sky, shake the earth” [we are] “about to inaugurate the greatest battle in the history of our country…” Differing strategies, political doctrine, cultural ideologies, popular opinion; both for and against, are defining characteristics of the Vietnam War. Lasting nearly twenty years and claiming the lives of over two million people, it has left a distinct imprint on international politics and the “hearts and minds” of countless others around the world. Beginning in November of 1955, with the exit of French military forces from former ‘French Indochina’, United States support originally began as a containment strategy to limit communist expansionism by the Soviet Union and its allies. A partition at the 17th parallel divided Vietnam into a communist supported North and democratic South following a rigged election in October 1955 by Ngo Dinh Diem. Large scale, organized dissidence erupted across South Vietnam between 1954 and 1957, but was not effectively quelled by Diem’s government. By mid 1958 increasing levels of violence and political disobedience reached a level where legislation permitting “death and property confiscation” was enacted for acts of violence. In March of 1956 southern communist leader Le Duan proposed a plan to other members of the Politburo to revitalize insurgency in South Vietnam; the proposal was unequivocally rejected, however limited measures to revitalize the insurgency were approved in December. North Vietnamese communist leadership approved a ‘people’s war’ on South Vietnam at a session in January 1959. The first arms delivery via the ‘Ho Chi Minh Trail’ through secluded and mountainous areas of Laos was completed by August. Laos was invaded by North Vietnam that same year and used over 30,000 troops quickly construct routes for the movement of troops and supplies through areas of Cambodia and Laos. Between 1961 and 1963, 40,000 communist troops infiltrated into South Vietnam; coordinated North Vietnamese offensives exploded across the country the following year. Based on the internet tactics, style of the attack used, and possible source; NSA Cyber Security analysts think Chinese hackers are responsible. At this time it is not known whether the hackers were part of the Chinese government, or were independent and merely working for the government. Data compromised includes; payroll records, addresses and personal contact information, and past and present work assignments, the information itself going from present back to 1985. The NSA and U.S. government have been urging all government employees affected to ‘promptly change all passwords and contact information.’ Chinese ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai calls the statement ‘Irresponsible and extremely damaging to already tense war-time relations.’” - Noah Hughes - BBC News, Washington D.C. International Aid Workers Assist In Nepal “The Indian recall of nearly half a million potentially contaminated rations en route to earthquake survivors in Nepal appears to be effective. But now the question of how to help the already suffering people of Nepal is once again up for debate…” “Dark, acrid, and suffocating smoke hangs in the air on the Indian side of the Nepalese-Indian border; where almost 500,000 food rations destined for earthquake survivors burn in ditches along the road. The food supplies were recalled over government fears of potential Botulism contamination, caused by ill-maintained manufacturing equipment. The Indian supply company responsible for the possible contamination declined to comment. The Indian military along with the Chinese humanitarian agency People’s Reprieve have been working closely to monitor food ration distribution and ill displaced that arrive at camps for the displaced and affected. The non-profit organizations Doctor’s Without Borders and the Red Cross are also making strides in Nepal. Nearly thirty-seven mobile camps and medical facilities have been quickly constructed in an attempt to help earthquake survivors. British, American, and French volunteer medical personnel have been working tirelessly to house and feed those who arrive. A British physician working with Doctor’s Without Borders called the situation ‘Heartbreaking.’” - Timothy Timm – Reuters. North Korean and Chinese Troops Assault DMZ Base “An extremely well coordinated assault by North Korean and Chinese forces including suicide bombers on a South Korean-U.S. army base along western coast of the Korean Demilitarized Zone has renewed fears that the conflict on the Korean Peninsula may be expanding into a regional-wide war” “Walls riddled with bullet holes, destroyed vehicles, and smoldering buildings are the result of the latest Chinese-North Korean assault on a military base along the Pacific coast near the Korean DMZ. ‘I’ve never seen anything like it before. Gunfire, huge explosions, and the fact it happened so quickly, really scared us. The two others with me that night were killed.’ A 27 year old army Sergeant told a reporter. The attack last night has renewed nears that North Korea and China may attempt pushes to take portions of the Demilitarized Zone piece by piece, no matter what the cost. The joint Chinese-Korean coalition have already gained control of several large portions of the DMZ stretching all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The assault has also renewed fears from the Japanese that the long-running regional conflict may expand to their coastline. The presence of United States military bases and storage facilities on the archipelago has only increased fears and probability of a possible future attack.” - Kelly Jones - Detroit Free Press. Supplies For 5,000 Arrive in Eastern Europe "Supplies to equip and mobilize 5,000 troops including tanks, fighting vehicles, and ammunition have arrived in unspecified areas of Eastern Europe as part of a plan to deter possible Russian aggression towards countries in Eastern Europe. The bill which was just recently on the desk of the Secretary of War is already being implemented as a strategy to discourage Vladimir Putin from any possible moves. In recent years Vladimir Putin has made increasingly aggressive political and military moves towards countries in Southern Europe, including the deployment of Russian military troops and aircraft near the borders of these nations. Along with several trade agreements and military protection pacts with authorities in Beijing, many countries in the region are becoming increasingly fearful of potential Russian occupation." - Brandon Nieman – Reuters. South Korean Forces Routed In Miscalculated Assault "South Korean infantry conducting an assault on North Korean positions north of Gyeonggi-Do have suffered unacceptable levels of causalities and had to retreat before further losses were taken. The offensive which initially went according to plan with infantry recapturing several key positions north of the historic city of Incheon including previously lost radar stations and ammunition depots. However, immense levels of North Korean artillery as well as support from previously unexpected light aircraft forced South Korean forces to pull back from positions just captured or risk further dead and wounded. The South Korean government called the failed attack 'tragic for the people of this country.' The failed in Gyeonggi-Do province highlights the growing problem of continuing North Korean and Chinese assaults on checkpoints along the demilitarized zone and the growing concern of Seoul and Washington that China and North Korea may make a future push towards Incheon." - Rebecca Rewley – USA Today.
