  1. For pictures view this article on my site at http://jonkraatz.com/?p=109 The history of project Blue Ghost This was my very first airsoft gun, it started out as a well loved AK-74M manufactured by a Chinese company called CYMA. Sure it was cheap and poorly made but it was a portal into the wonderful sport of Airsoft. For me this is where it all began. This is where my love for tech and modifications was born. Encased in a cast zinc shell laid a set of greasy gears and dirty plastics, but I didn't care. This was a masterpeice in the making. For the next year and a half I would save up my hard earned money to buy shiny new parts for my rifle. I would make numerous mistakes and errors, but in the end I would learn my trade. The story of project Blue Ghost is the story of my path to becoming a Benchtech. Laying the groundwork When I first received my rifle in its generic cardboard box the first thing I did was tear it apart (much to the dismay of my parents). After closely examining each and every part and seeing how it interacted I had a rough understanding of the workings. I was able to put it back together with the exception of the hopup unit and took it to my local field for the first time. After the whirlwind of action and adrenaline which every airsofter experiences their first time I came to the conclusion that my beloved rifle needed some serious improvment. After much reaserch and learning valuble information on modifications such as shimming and AOE correction, I set to work on what would be soon known as Blue Ghost. Before I could start upgrading I had to improve what already existed. I stripped down the internals and grabbed an old toothbrush and some denatured alcohol. After I had scrubbed every part clean of grim I started the long and frustating process of leaning to shim. It took me half the day but I finally got the gears to satifactory levels. When I had completed every modification recommended on the online forums I religiously studied, I started onto the next step. . . upgrades. The long path of upgrades Finally the time had come, the moment that I had waited months for. Now that I had the groundwork laid and the money saved up I could finally start investing in some upgrades that would lead to real performance. After comparing nearly every brand of motor I settled on a set of SHS 13:1 gears, a Lonex A-1 (Balanced) motor, and a BAAL piston. Combined with a 11.1v Turnigy LiPo I had a seriously capable rifle. . . until it started screaching. Turns out a M90 spring isn't strong enough to propel the piston fast enough to keep it from crashing into the sector gear. Thankfully I didn't see the need to expoxy in the piston rack so it was ripped off and the sector gear was saved. Three pistons, five springs, one motor, and six months later I had a winning combo. With a Lonex HT motor, M110, and a SHS blue piston my build was looking promising. While the HT motor decreased ROF the trigger response and efficiency were very notably increased. I took this setup many times to my local field D14 but I was still not satisfied. Current setup and performance Blue Ghost has come along way, with it's polished gearbox and black oxide treated gears only the stock cylinder head hints of it's origin. The blue glass-fiber nylon piston along with being dead silent gives project Blue Ghost it's name. In the end I decided to keep the Lonex A-2 motor dispite having issues with Lonex motors in the past. To replace the deteriorating stock shell I decided to go with a polished zinc shell by Lonex. Along with the shell came a dark blue nylon fiber tappet plate and 8mm steel bearings. I also kept the SHS 13:1 gears although I plan to replace them with Siegetek 10:1 gears in the future. For the piston I chose the iconic SHS blue which is a favorite among techs. The piston came pre-swiss cheesed from a drillpress. All of the compression parts except the cylinder are stock CYMA, they haven't failed yet. To save the trigger contacts from arcing is a GATE Warfet 1.1 which has proved to be an invaluable upgrade. For range and accuracy at a decent price I chose a 455mm ZCI 6.03mm barrel, coupled with Maple Leaf bucking and H-hop nub. The ZCI barrel can hurl .28g bb's up to 400ft (at 400fps with .20g) but effective range is closer to 300ft. The rate of fire is about 28-30 rounds/sec maximum though I have it dialed down to 20 as I feel anything higher is unnecessary for skirmishes. In all this build cost far more than I care to think about but it was well worth it for the knowledge and experience. The countless hours and frustration put into this build gives this rifle special meaning. It's a well tuned piece of tech that never fails to turn heads, but more importantly it's somthing I can be proud of.
  2. I have a KJW KP-05 Hi-capa. But its outer barrel has an orange tip painted on and no threads. I have purchased a WE outer barrel (5.1) after reading some reviews that it will work after some work with a Dremel/File. I have worked on the differences but the slide gets stuck once in 3 shots and doesn't stop releasing gas from the magazine. I purchased the barrel to install and adapter and then a suppressor. There reason for this post is to ask you if you know specifically what to do, Thanks. Review "Some minor modification needed to fit a KJW 1911. This was the basic model they sell. It took me 5 min with a dremel. It seems it may need some breaking in as the slide doesn't rack as easily. Also note that hanging a heavy silencer off the end will cause more friction with your slide, this caused a noticeable decrease in gas efficiency. Maybe sanding it with high grit paper and using a bit of grease on the outer barrel will fix this." Product purchased: http://www.evike.com/products/28513/ Maybe useful info: When I took out the barrel the hop up unit briefly got stuck on the slide. Slide got stuck when it was moving towards me.
  3. Hi, I'm looking to use an airsoft spring-powered gun to shoot 43cal paintballs (11mm, ~0.7g). I have the means of machining some parts (barrel + hopper mechanism), but wouldn't want them to be too complicated. We also don't need much range and don't need the typical 300-400fps speeds. Likely ~100fps would be sufficient. Some of my questions: 1. Would this be a reasonable modification and would there be enough power in a typical airsoft gun to propel a paintball of the above specs? 2. What are the strongest springs that can be put into a typical airsoft gun, and would that significantly increase the power? 3. How difficult would it be to manufacture a custom barrel (11mm diameter) and have that work with a typical airsoft upper gearbox? I.e. what's important to ensure the ball gets propelled correctly? 4. Has anyone ever heard of anyone doing something similar, I.e. using a spring-powered gun for shooting paintballs? I don't know much about airsoft or paintball to begin with, so if there's any more information that would be helpful to answer these questions, please let me know. Here are some of the gearboxes I was looking at for reference: Lonex 8mm Enhanced Bearing AEG Gearbox Ver.3 ICS M4 Bore Up Complete Upper Gearbox for ICS M4 D Boy OEM Complete AK v3 Gearbox CYMA Complete Version 3 AK Full Metal Gearbox w/ High Torque Motor If there are any other sites to be looking at for gearboxes, please let me know. Thanks!
  4. Recently, I was feeling the urge to get myself a Makarov airsoft replica. I was heavily considering the Gun Heaven Makarov, but was able to find the WE Tech Makarov 50% off on Airsoft Megastore, so I went with a 76 dollar purchase over a 160 dollar one. The one problem I have with the WE Tech Makarov however, is that its grip is nothing like the original. To solve this, I was thinking of purchasing an actual makarov grip and replacing WE Tech's grip with it. The location of the screw holding the grip and gun together, is in the same place on the WE Tech Makarov as it is on the actual Makarov (or so it seems). So this modification should be plausible right? I was wondering if anyone here has actually tried and accomplished this particular modification. If not, if anyone here has experience replacing parts on airsoft guns with their real life counterparts, I'd appreciate some input. Do you think I'd be wasting 20 dollars on a Makarov grip, or is this worth a shot? WE TECH Makarov Grip: http://imgur.com/3Gt0a2E Real Makarov Grip: http://imgur.com/yG07JV7
  5. NVG question! Question for anyone that might be using Sightmark Ghost Hunter 2x24,do you know if is possible to switch the plate where the j-arm sits to the other side and how? Saw a video on youtube of someone with them and he said he did it to his and I want to do it to mine to get the groove on the j-arm to match up. Let me know
  6. Yes, I know the Miracle Barrel is not a mod itself- it's a barrel for sale which boasts a very simple modification to the standard barrel design- where the BB sits in a consistent position pre-trigger-pull. Is the Miracle Barrel better than other options out there because of this? :censored2: if I know, I just know this is a design any barrel would benefit from, and it isn't complicated, so I want to apply it. I'm wondering if anyone here has attempted to modify their barrel to recreate this design, or seriously considered it? The only thing stopping me from committing 100% to this is...well, life- I'm on break, and last time I left for school, Airsoft got sidetracked a depressing amount Depending on the coming weeks, I may take this project up wholeheartedly, and am seriously interested in it regardless. My first thought was drilling four holes on the underside of the barrel appropriately, to anchor some 'tracks' used for the actual support of the BB. This may be as simple as four holes, and some copper wire strung through like shoelaces, held secure by (and plugging the holes via) Loctite. Any input?
  7. Hi again!, I´m modifyng the AGM shotgun to fit my needs and make it suitable to be used in CQB battles. I´ve found that this shotgun fires at more than 370 fps!!!, so it´s use is absolutely forbidden in those kind of matches (at least here in Spain). I have dissasembled it to see what I can do to make it lower its power, and I´ve seen that the spring it´s quite similar to the ones mounted on AEGs, so, before I start cutting the original spring I want to know, wouldn´t it be better to use an SP85 instead?. What are your experience with this shotgun?.
  8. My kwa g36 had its gearbox break and ive been desperately trying to find a replacement for it. I know I can get it from kwa but for 90 bucks its too expensive for me. I wondering if anyone has had any luck either just fitting or modifying any other style gearbox for it or is the anywhere I can find a used gearbox shell for cheap. really anything will help at this point. thanks
