20 Bb Per Shot @ 300 Fps Airsoft Shotgun

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'd like to tap the collective airsoft experience here.

Why do airsoft shotguns only shoot at most 9 bb's and with such poor fps performance (I know the single or triple shots do better but still ... )?

Shouldn't a shotgun be a large blast at reasonable fps of at least 20 bb's?

To remedy this my friend and I have built a prototype shotgun that shoots 20 bb's at 300 fps in a nice typical shotgun scatter pattern.

We are intent on converting it to pump action (use shells into which the 20 bb's get loaded) to hold 4 or 5 shells and possibly commercializing it.

Does this gun sound appealing?

The only potential drawback is that it uses co2 or an external pump (think of pumping up your bike tire) to pressurize the chamber.

We learned that typical compressed propane (what you put in your gas gun) just does not have enough potential energy to expell 20 bb's simultaneously with any reasonable fps (unless the barrel was 10 feet long). CO2 cartridges are pressurized at about 800 psi compared to propane gas cans which are at about 150 psi. Currently, with co2 cartridges you can get about 20 shots (20 bb's at once per shot) and with the external pump the number of shots would be on the order of 200.

An electric version also proved unreasonable.

Is co2 or the external pump a big turn off or does the performance offset these caveats?

If anyone would like to see videos let me know.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think an external bike pump would be realistic option, maybe you could use a remote c02 tank. I like your thought process.

co2 isn't a big turn off, a large external pump is.

And also, an important thing, what would the availability of the shells be? Because I don't want to have to be worrying about losing a shell, and having to pay $25 to get another, or not be able to get another at all.

So if only 1 bb was loaded into a shell would it shoot at a higher fps? This reminds me of cocking a crosman pistol like 10 times and making it shoot all of those bb's, even though they go ~5 feet.

If I'm understanding this correctly, then I've seen something that is basically the same thing. It was a paintball marker with a shotgun shell type cartridge. It was for a design project that was basically a paintball shotgun, where they filled the cartridge with 6mm paintballs. I don't know how far or hard it fired, but it essentially used an existing paintball marker as the main assembly, though yours is probably different. Given that it was designed and made within about 2 months, it wasn't as polished as it could potentially have been with more work, and appeared to only be a single shot before having to reload. The idea is similar, but my guess is that you would need similar amounts of gas as a paintball marker to propel that many BBs, though it would depend on your barrel's size and how the BBs are packed.

anybody heard of a grenade launcher. We could just make them smaller and put them in a longer barrel or just have a pistol style sawn off shotgun

good idea. take a 40mm grenade shell and custom build a shotty around it.

Like n'yah?

I am working on the plans for one, although I wont get work started on it until mid December when school is over.

The problem though is that it is much larger than a shotgun (and that one only holds 3+1 shells).

Or a 20mm shell. It'd be a lot closer to a real shotgun.

Edit: I just remembered this. Post #176 and 179

That looks like something from Warhammer 40k.....

I thought the days of carrying huge gas rigs on your back were over.

yea a much smaller shell would work a lot better

What about something with a bigger, paintball-style, co2 tank in the stock.

And maybe disposable, 1-time-use shells? Like a real shotgun.

muahahaha, for some reason that made me think of an airsoft flamethrower, which is basically a hose that just sprays out a costnat stream of bbs

orange bbs

for realism

I saw one of those, and I wanted it so bad, but alas I could not have it. :a-surrender:

But a 20mm madbull style shell w/ 4 barrels would be very nice, each barrel could hold 5 bbs, for 20 shots, and you could charge it up with a madbull CO2 charger. Make a pump action mechanism and voila! It would prolly be about the size of the halo shotgun, 8 gauge, but that's not bad.

I think that would work better for paintball cuz you could just shout out a stream of orange paint

The video we have been able to compile (with the limited time we now have) is here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJAXEHXuHhA

Keep in mind the shotgun you are seeing is a *rough* proof of concept prototype. I'm sorry we could not show more details of the inner workings (have to keep some concepts proprietary).

We budgeted only a day to video and edit. We made the decision to move forward with the commercialization of our newest prototype which is being worked on now (not what is shown in the video). This decision forced us to decide to not spend as much time on the video as we wanted.

I think a bike pump type thing might work. Pump it for a few minutes before a match and your set, right? Honestly, who would use 200 SHOTGUN shots in a game, especially CQB.

No. I have always wanted a shotgun that shot a burst bigger than five smaller than forty without looking like a grenade launcher. If I had to pump anything, that would ruin the deal for me. Make it very practical to shoot and reload with, and don't make it look like a bunch of trash you guys pulled out of your closet, and I will be in love.

The stainless-silver-looking barrel is kinda out of place, but the color of the product is the least of your worries for now.

Looks great, and I'm not the kind of person who could make anything close to this.
