Most Realistic War Movie?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious to know what you guys, vets or not find to be the most realistic war movie. If your not a vet I don't know how you could really judge properly, but unless your a military and war historian or your family is all involved.

Sorry, but Enemy at the Gates is NOT the most accurate. Vasili's so-called cat-and-mouse with the other sniper was (from what I heard) fictitious and for the sake of Soviet propaganda. Sure, he wrote it in his diary, but there's no evidence to support he wasn't just writing it for encouraging his comrades and the folks at home.

I'd say Saving Private Ryan's opening scene at Normandy is as accurate as you'll get in that particular part. Never saw the rest of the movie, though.

Modern movies based on the past are usually more accurate than the older decades' attempts because of this era's more desensitized generations which allows the more gritty gory aspects of war to be seen in more mainstream outlets and also the older films paint war often as a more orderly and borderline romanticist depiction of combat like John Wayne's many films, To Hell and Back (though it still rocked, I say), and of course, Sgt. York *makes turkey calls to get Germans to poke their heads out*.

Actually, I tried that turkey thing once in airsoft, didn't work. Those must have been some gullible Germans to fall for that.

Only problem I saw with the hurt locker was the explosions. Really, 1 IED isn't gonna make a 100ft fireball.

Enemy at the gates was pretty freakin' unrealistic IMO. At least the sniper scenes were. The rest of the movie seemed to be rather realistic.

It really depends on what explosive medium is used. You have to take into account some of the other factors, for example, was it in or near a car. If that car happened to have a form of fuel in its tank, which it most likely would, that would definitely cause an incendiary reaction.

Hurt locker = CRAP

Barret vs SVD with that much ambient mirage = crap

Bloody ammo jammed? = crap

Wreckless EOD = F***ing BS with a capital B

EOD yanking on det cord to pull up IED = F*** BS with a capital B

Senior NCO running caught at a gate with no escort, no pass, on foot, and not ending up in the brig with a pile of Art. 15's = crap as tall as the art15 pile should have been.

Senior NCO running off with two others, no infantry support chasing an alleged suspect with no comms, no escort, no wheels, and at night then has one wounded but loses no rank or spends no time in the brig? = Utter BS with a huge flaming B!

Running around Baghdad or in the middle of the desert all by themselves without a convoy escort or any sort of support? = I've seen raw sewage reclamation facilities with less crap in them.

AQ has been boosting their IED's with propane tanks and gas for a while so lots of fire isn't that unrealistic. The lack of shrapnel though....

And since when did Peltors act as radio transceivers? They're plug in headsets only.

BoB and the Pacific by far even though the first half of the Pacific was crap (2nd half with snafu was teh win).

In addition to what you wrote, there are more unrealistic things depicted in the Hurt Locker. One of which is that, IIRC, in the year the movie was supposed to take place, ACU was not common issue yet. However, everyone (in the military) seen in the movie was wearing ACU.

There were other things as well, but I can't remember them. Also, the sniper rifle the terrorists used in the infamous sniper seen was NOT an SVD. I forget what it was exactly, but it was similar to the SVD. Overall, I still enjoyed the Hurt Locker. Not for it's fictitious representation of military happenings, but more for the psychological side of war. Not that I would know, but it interested me.

Blackhawk Down (did a report on it, only 2-3 scenes were fictional/wrong)

I've read the book written about Operation Gothic Serpent (by Mark Bowden) in addition to a book written (edited by someone else) by some of the soldiers that participated in the event, and there were some things that were different. Some names were changed, and I think a few characters in the movie were fusions of multiple soldiers that were there. Other than that, the movie seemed quite accurate to the books.

If any of this post is illegible, I apologize. I'm very sleepy. :a-laugh:

Das Boot...they actually built the sets to scale just an amazing piece of work. A must see.

And for land battles...Stalingrad. Follows a squad through some really awful stuff. You have to see this movie.

The Pacific and Band of Brothers are great ones most people have seen.

Sands of Iwo Jima and Flags of our Fathers are great choices too.

Some movies that were decent include Full Metal Jacket, 84 Charlie Mopic (except them eating Mre's in viet nam lol but good for a budget movie)
