[PLEASE HELP] HK UMP Opinions

Recommended Posts

Today is my 15th birthday and I have been bothering my parents for a A&K M249 MK2, though my dad got me a HK UMP (from dicks).

First of all, the fact that its from Dicks (and not Airsoft Atlanta, etc) sets off a alarm to me, as its not a dedicated airsoft store.

My dad said he has been "asking around" and found that this gun is the best of the best. He said its one of the best guns I can get, and has the exact same stats as the M249. He also said that he heard the M249 jams easily due to the highspeed ROF. He said it is too heavy (claiming it is 20lb+) to comfortably play with all of the "running around".

The UMP apparently has metal internals and a few exterior pieces (I would think this is a huge issue, as it would break extremely easily). My dad's solution was to get a warranty.

Can someone compare these two guns together, and also with the top gun(s) (in your opinion).

I am new to airsoft, so I don't know anything about positions/gameplay, or modding.

I had friends recommend the M249.

Thank you so much! I don't want to sound ungreatful, I simply want to have an educated choice. My dad said its absolutely fine if I want another gun, I just want to know which one.

EDIT: I'd like to add that I have no preference of what position I am in (as of now), but I have a good feeling I will want to be moving around.

NEVER EVER ever EVER buy an airsoft gun from a place such as Dicks Sporting Goods. You pay well over twice what the item is worth, and get a sub-par airsoft gun as a result [ex: the $180 FAMAS they sell there have trouble selling for $60 NEW on eBay].

Virtually any gun bought from a legitimate airsoft retailer such as Evike will be a far better value and out-perform that gun. I would highly suggest returning it IF possible.

With that said, I would not suggest a SAW weapon as your first legitimate airsoft gun. I see this happen from time to time, people get these big heavy and cool looking weapons, learn they like to run and gun versus just sitting in the back and shooting everything that moves, then they're stuck with this big expensive gun they don't like to use.

As your first platform, I would highly suggest an Assault Rifle platform, such as an M4, G36C, AK, etc. Pick which one you like the best, budget for everything, etc., and a fair amount of people will give input on what's good and what's bad.

Thank you very much for your input! I was thinking the same thing for almost every point you made!

In your opinion, which assault rifle would you recommend?

Quite frankly, it's whichever you like best. The style of gun doesn't determine the performance or quality of it, the brand matters. Each brand has strengths and weaknesses, and each is known for a certain style of gun.

Which is your favorite?

Approximate budget for everything? [Gun itself, battery, smart charger, BB's, proper eye protection, etc.]

Also, general setting you'd be playing in? [Ex: Field versus CQB]

I would be looking at about $175 - $290 (if I spend a little to help my parents)

My friends go to an indoor building called EliteOps. Heres a picture:

No problem, most of us are more than glad to help.

One final thing going forward, avoid ANYTHING with the name "Cybergun", "Softair", "Palco Sports", "Colt" (except through Echo1), etc. in it. These are quite literally rebrands of less expensive airsoft guns. They add "official trademarks" to the guns and raise the price $30-50, nothing else.
