Tactical AK Upgrade

Recommended Posts

Alright, so I'd like to upgrade my AK74 to look somewhat like this: http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj220/f...tr/IMG_0917.jpg

And I am starting with this: http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?products_id=2881

It's a very good gun, that's why I'd like to upgrade instead of start completely over. Now, the first problem I'm running into is that my battery is stored in the butt stock, and I wasn't sure if you can store a battery in a retractable stock. Does anyone know if it can be stored? I'm having trouble finding any retractable stocks for the AK, any suggestions? Also, I've seen you can mount a red dot scope on the handguard or the top cover. Any opinions on this? Does it really make a difference where it's mounted?

Thanks!

The modifications you are looking to make will cost more than twice as much as your gun. Full stop.

My suggestion- get an LCT kit

and a 363mm inner barrel, drop in your current bits, and enjoy. LCT externals are the best externals you can buy, and are full steel and will not break.

As far as red dot mounting, I have an Ultimak on my real AKM and a Midwest Industries Micro Dot mount on my Dboys AK-105, both with Primary Arms micro dots. The main thing on an AK is getting the red dot low enough to cowitness, OR having it on a QD mount so you can remove it to use your irons if the dot gets busted.

That mount with whatever red dot you wish will allow you to remove the mount if the dot gets broken or for transport.

Thanks. I'm still wondering though, do you, or anyone know if you can store the battery in the retractable stock, or how to modify so that I can?

Why would you want to, really? It's FAR easier to access the top cover and you can fit much larger batteries in there. There's literally no point except making it a real pain in the butt to change batteries in the middle of a firefight.

The basic gist of that would be getting a new wiring set or rewiring your current set so that the plug is more toward the rear, and then you need to route the wiring through the stock tube. You may need some modifications to your parts for that.

Because of the size constraint with the AR/M4 type stock and tube, I don't see it being highly beneficial to change your gun's wiring to that area. It will make taking the gearbox in and out more troublesome afterwards.

You can fit the same size battery in both the stock and the top cover. I would not consider either option ideal, but the top cover will provide much easier access and allow you to move everything around in there much easier. The only really benefit would come from running a big battery in a full stock or an external battery pouch.

Why you would want an m4 stock on AK is beyond me though :a-grin:

I am getting one for one reason: Armor. The standard stock is the absolute perfect length for me when I am running slick (chest rig/hydro carrier) but with my plate carrier I can't even shoulder the gun. Also if you happen to have unusually long or short arms, the adjustment allows you fit the stock to your build and therefore help you shoot better.

I mean if thats your only reason why not just get a stubbier AK stock or something?

*shrug*

Never mind woe is me for offering unwanted advice.

All that said I do believe somewhere out there for around 200$ there exists a stock tactical AK, maybe under the brand JG, that looks more like your original photo and costs less than the LCT kit. So for whatever thats worth.......

Honestly though I concur with a few of the people above that trying to "M4" an AK sounds cool, but its not really financially practical. There are AK for AK sake modifications that do basically the same thing, retractable stock is the one exception as I don't recall one thats adjustable pull only folding although you can get them in all sorts of angles and lengths, and for much much less. *shrug*

Not what I was looking for, but cheaper than a body kit:

I'm putting one of these on my AK-105 along with a real Magpul CTR.

Seen the combination in use by Russian soldiers in several recent photos. The 105 is not just my CQB gun so I want to be able to put the length back to regular if I am not using a plate carrier.
